Japanese researchers recently found that when animals under stress were exposed to the compound linalool-- a fragrant substance found in lemons, as well as in mango, lavender, basil, and some teas--they experienced lower levels of inflammatory chemicals in their blood, compared with another group that did not smell the linalool. Inhaling the scent also reduced the activity of more than 100 genes that are activated during stressful situations.

THE ZINGY fresh scent of a lemon may help elevate your mood, according to new research. Scientists at the Center for Autoimmune Diseases at Tel Aviv University recently discovered a link between depression and our sense of smell, and found that citrus fragrances — lemons in particular — directly affected neurotransmitters in the brains of mice. The aromas help boost serotonin, a feel-good hormone, and reduce levels of norepinephrine, a stress hormone.

Oral thrush is an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a normal organism in the gastrointestinal tract and mouth. It commonly occurs in people who are immunosuppressed, especially those with HIV/AIDS. In severe cases of oral thrush, the person has difficulty swallowing, which limits the ability to consume nutritious meals and take oral medicines.
