In this small study, GABA seemed to work effectively as a natural relaxant and its effects could be seen within 1 hour of its administration to induce relaxation and diminish anxiety. Moreover, the authors suggest, GABA administration may enhance immunity under stress conditions.

GABA may help prevent post-traumatic stress disorder

The neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) exerts a prominent effect on stress responses and has been associated with acute posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For this study, plasma GABA levels were measured in 78 traumatized victims of road traffic who received in-hospital treatment for at least 3 days. At 6 weeks and at 1 year, mean post-trauma GABA levels were significantly lower among subjects who met all or nearly all criteria for post traumatic stress disorder.
