Merits. My name is John William Payne, born in Canada and in Scouting since 19 years of age. With the exception that I took this year off, but am planning to return in Sept.

*30 years of Scouting being a leader of every age group of Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers with the exception of Beavers.

* Gilwell Training and holder of my beads of training.

* Various small camp awards.

* Long term 10 year medal and 15 and 20 year pin and so on.

* Medal of Good Service.

In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.

In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.

It is a man's own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.

It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.

It is better to travel well than to arrive.

The eight fold path can be divided into 3 categories: Wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental development.

Paths:

1. Right view.
2. Right intention.
3. Right speech.
4. Right action.
5. Right livelihood.
6. Right effort.
7. Right mindfulness.
8. Right concentration.

Wisdom: Right view, right intention.

Ethical conduct: Right speech, right action, right livelihood.

Mental development: Right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

The Four Noble Truths
1. Life means suffering.
2. The origin of suffering is attachment.

--He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened.

--I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.

--In the world there is nothing more submissive and weak than water. Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong nothing can surpass it.

--Manifest plainness, embrace simplicity, reduce selfishness, have few desires.

--The key to growth is the introduction of higher dimensions of consciousness into our awareness.

1. (originally in Hinduism and Buddhism) A word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation.

A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that is considered capable of "creating transformation" (cf. spiritual transformation)
--You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

--There is no fire like passion, there is no shark like hatred, there is no snare like folly, there is no torrent like greed.

--Let a man who knows the double path of gain and loss, thus place himself that knowledge may grow.
