What is Orthomolecular Medicine?

"You can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency," Dr. Linus Pauling, the only person in history who was awarded two unshared Nobel prizes. "Orthomolecular Medicine is the achievement and preservation of the best health and the prevention and treatment of disease by varying concentrations in the human body of substances that are normally present in the human body and are required for health."

"...varying concentrations in the human body of substances that are normally present in the human body..." This means correcting the chemical imbalance that is causing illness and disease today through substances found in nature and not pharmaceutical drugs.

Ortho-Molecular

"Ortho" means "correct" or "right" and a "molecule" is "the smallest particle of a substance that retains all the properties of the substance and is composed of one or more atoms". So "orthomolecular" means "correct molecule", and the correct molecules that are being referred to are nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, enzymes, essential fatty acids, etc.

Orthomolecular Medicine

Orthomolecular medicine is the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of substances which are natural to the body, quite often in megadoses exceeding the "normal" recommended daily dosage. The purpose is to restore the optimum environment of the body by correcting imbalances and/or deficiencies.

Organic Materials

It's important to stress that this is not referring to the use of the artificial inorganic chemically produced vitamins that are so popular in stores nowadays. This refers to natural organic supplements "normally found in the body". Organic matter is something that has been derived from living things, and contains carbon, or is carbon-bond.

Orthomolecular Psychiatry

Orthomolecular psychiatry is simply the use of "the right molecules in the right amounts" to help prevent and treat mental and emotional disorders such as ADHD, alcoholism, Alzheimer's Disease, anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, depression, drug addiction, hyperactivity, retardation, schizophrenia, and senility. This provides the optimal molecular environment for the mind.

Bodily Needs

Nutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, enzymes, co-enzymes, antioxidants, phytochemicals, etc. are absolutely required in order for the body to function properly. Minerals are largely obtained from the foods we eat, and the mineral content of our foods depends upon the mineral content of the soil that it's grown in. So if our soils are depleted of minerals from the use of chemicals, so are our foods, and so are our bodies in turn. If our processed machine-made food is inorganic, that doesn't supply the body with what it needs either. If the body doesn't receive all of the proper raw materials that it needs, health problems and degenerative diseases are sure to follow. Many of the "foods" we buy in the grocery store today are severely lacking in nutrients and/or they contain harmful contaminants.

Individual Biochemistry

Biochemical individual is a main principle of orthomolecular medicine. This principle was elucidated by Roger J. Williams, Ph.D. This principle is quite simple: every living organism is unique! Furthermore, each individual requires different relative amounts of nutrients for his or her satisfaction and optimal level of health. The government sets a minimum recommended daily allowance (RDA) which is supposed to be adequate for all individuals. However, many may need to exceed the RDA as well as the recommended 2,000 calorie diet in order to prevent severe deficiency disease. Thus, RDA values are not perfect guidelines for everyone. Several studies have proven the existence of biochemical individuality. For example, studies of guinea pigs showed a twentyfold variation in their requirement for vitamin C. A study conducted with human subjects revealed that children have varying needs for vitamin B6.

Mental Disorders as Molecular Disease

In this video, Dr. Pauling discusses phenylalanine. L-phenylalanine, an essential amino acid that is converted into L-tyrosine, another one of the DNA-encoded amino acids. L-tyrosine in turn is converted into L-DOPA, which is further converted into dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline) (the latter three are known as the catecholamines). Low levels of dopamine in the brain has been associated with Parkinson's Disease, addiction and depression. Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained from food or food supplements.

Narrator: Well, what are the broader implications of this concept of yours of molecular disease? Do you envisage, for example, a kind of new medicine which will be based more fundamentally on chemotherapy for example?

Dr. Pauling: Yes, I would say so.

I think that we shall be able to get a more thorough understanding of the nature of disease in general by investigating the molecules that make up the human body including the abnormal molecules and that this understanding will permit disease to be attacked, the problem of disease to be attacked, in a more straight-forward manner, such that new methods of therapy will be developed. For example, we are working now on a disease called phenylketonuria. Phenylketonuria is a disease that involves a bad gene. Normal human beings have inherited two genes from their parents that manufacture an enzyme, a special protein in the liver that catalyzes the oxidation of an amino acid, phenylalanine, to form another amino acid, tyrosine. Now, we ingest, we eat food containing phenylalanine all the time. An ordinary protein is about five percent phenylalanine.

So that everybody gets a lot of phenylalanine into his body by way of eating proteon [proteins]. He has to eat protein to build up his body. This phenylalanine is in large part converted into another substance by the action of the enzyme in the liver. One person in eighty has only one good gene for this enzyme and then he has one bad gene, the result of a genetic mutation. A bad gene that will not manufacture a good enzyme.

These people, we have been studying the activity of the liver of these people. We give them some phenylalanine, and then we take a sample of blood and determine what has happened to that phenylalanine in the course of one or two or three hours, and we find that normal individuals are able to destroy, to change the phenylalanine to tyrosine twice as fast as these people, one in eighty, who are the carriers of one bad gene.

Nutrients are the chemical components of diet and are essential to life and health. Nutrients are classed as either macronutrients or micronutrients:

macronutrients are carbohydrates (sugars and starches), fats (including essential fatty acids), proteins (including essential amino acids), and fiber

micronutrients are vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that cannot be manufactured in the body, and so must be eaten daily.

If micronutritents are absent or too low, illness results. Scurvy, for example, is a disease resulting from lack of vitamin C. It used to be the curse of sailors who had to make long trips at sea with no access to fresh fruit or vegetables. Once the connection between scurvy and fresh fruit had been made, and the sailors issued lime juice to drink, scurvy virtually disappeared.

Nutritional therapists assess nutritional status and functional capacity. They recognize that each person’s needs are unique, depending on a number of factors, from inherited strengths and weaknesses to the influence of diet, lifestyle and environment. Nutritional therapists work with clients with chronic health problems and provide advice on disease prevention and control.

The nutritional therapist will take a comprehensive client history and may use biochemical and other types of clinical assessment to formulate a treatment plan.
