Abstract:Reports on the usefulness of guaifenesin, an expectorant found in over-the-counter cold medications, for people with chronic sinusitis. Discovery of Mayo Clinic that Major Basic Protein found in the nasal mucus of people with chronic sinusitis injures the sinus lining, making the epithelium susceptible to bacterial infection; Effectiveness of using high doses of guaifenesin in increasing clearance of secretions and thinning secretions; Suggestion to start administering guaifenesin with a low dose and gradually increase to an effective dose.
