New mineral blends go on seamlessly to fake a perfect complexion naturally.

MINERAL MAKEUP IS ALL THE RAGE. It's also the healthiest way to add a little color to your world this winter. "Mineral makeup is made from a natural source — finely ground crushed minerals such as iron dioxide, titanium dioxide, and zinc," says Joli Baker, president of Pür Minerals Cosmetics. "It's also non-comedogenic, and the titanium and zinc provide a natural physical sunblock."

The real appeal of minerals is what's not in them: preservatives, talc, fragrance, chemicals, dyes, fillers, or other potential irritants. "Minerals are a perfect choice for people who have sensitive skin, rosacea, or acne, because they're oil-free and won't irritate the skin," says Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D., a New York City-based dermatologist.

If you've tried mineral makeup in the past, you may have found it hard to work with, overly pigmented, or too thick. But formulations have improved dramatically, and the ones being offered now are lighter, finer, and come in a wider range of colors.

It takes a bit of finesse to get the perfect look, but it's worth the effort. "Once you perfect a good mineral makeup technique, you'll never switch back," says Diane Ranger, founder of Colorescience Mineral Makeup. "This is the future."

for eyes
THREE WORDS: Less is more. Minerals have a lot of pigment, so start by applying the thinnest layer possible. "Use very little product and apply it layer by layer; this will give you a smooth, even look," says Lori Hart, owner of Lori Hart Minerals in Marina del Rey, Calif.

Try Lori Hart Minerals eye shadow in Gold Shimmer ($16; for a light holiday sparkle, or Bare Escentuals i.d. bareMinerals Glimmer in 2000 ($13; for a silver shine.

for lips
MINERALS MAY have a drying affect, so the key is to find a lip product with maximum hydrating benefits. Look for added shea butter or natural oils that will keep lips supple for eating, drinking — or kissing all night.

Try: Brush on Colorescience Lip Polish in Seduction ($15; with healing vitamin E for a light gloss, or for deeper color, opt for Pür Minerals Shea Butter Lipstick in Dusty Ruby ($15; with shea butter, jojoba oil, and wheat germ oil.

for cheeks
BEFORE APPLYING face powders or blushes, use a moisturizer for a healthy, dewy look, and make sure it's been fully absorbed to prevent streaking. "Sprinkle a tiny amount of product from the jar into the cap and really work your brush around in it to coat the bristles, then lightly dust your face," recommends Hart. "You can always add more."

Try: Jane Iredale PurePressed Blush in Whisper ($26:, a shimmery neutral peach that flatters mostskin tones. La Bella Donna Loose Mineral Foundation ($50; is famous for its smooth, light texture and silky finish; apply it with the luxurious La Bella Donna Mineral Makeup Brush ($45).
