Abstract:The article accounts on a carotenoid compound called meso-zeaxanthin, which was found to be a breakthrough in the prevention of macular degeneration. Meso-zeaxanthin is one of the macular pigment found in the macular region of the retina. It was noted that unlike lutein and zeaxanthin, the meso-zeaxanthin is not found in the diet, but is converted in the retina from ingested lutein. Recent research found that this compound is more important than lutein in protecting against macular degeneration.
