Abstract:Presents an understanding of the proper use of weight-loss drugs for overweight or obese people in the U.S. Overview of the recommendation given by a federal advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on over-the-counter availability of weight-loss medication, specifically orlistat (Xenical); Complexity of the reason for weight problems in the country; Background of failure and safety concerns involving weight medications; Information on the approval given by FDA in 1997 on sibutramine for long-term use in obesity.
