Increase antioxidants in diet with intense exercise program

The important thing to remember is that the number of free radicals generated during exercise depends on the intensity of the exercise and its duration. Recent studies on intensely training athletes have demonstrated a remarkable increase in free-radical generation and lipid peroxidation. Fortunately, these harmful effects can be reduced by increasing antioxidant intakes. It seems the reason more athletes do not develop severe diseases and advanced degeneration of tissues is that exercise also increases antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase and catalase, but it is not enough to protect the extreme athlete or chronic exerciser fully.

Unless antioxidants in the diet are proportionately increased, intense exercise can actually do more harm than good. In fact, a regular program of intense exercise will use up the body's existing supply antioxidants, and then start draining fixed antioxidants, such as glutathione, in cells. Why is this important? Because glutathione is one of the most versatile and powerful antioxidants in our bodies. It is critical to health and life itself.
