I am appalled at what people will eat for breakfast. Many women have a cup of black coffee only. Men either eat no breakfast or have toast with margarine and jelly, while some have pancakes, bacon or sausage, and a big glass of bovine extract (milk) to was it all down. Professional people usually have at least two cups of caffeinated coffee to get their motor started.

Doctors are the worst. They drink coffee as if it were the elixir of life. The only time I see them without a Styrofoam cup in their hand is when they are operating. Being sleep-deprived most of their professional lives, they feel they need the caffeine to keep going: not a very good plan. A department head at the medical university where I trained feel to the floor one afternoon with a full-blown grand mal seizure. We later learned that he drank about 20 cups of coffee a day. Most people are not aware that high caffeine intake can actually precipitate seizures in otherwise normal people.

We have seen throughout this book that sugar can be a very toxic substance. It can form attachments to proteins that interfere with their function and significantly increase the risk of oxidation, which makes them vulnerable to free-radical injury and causes rapid advances in aging. This is a major problem with diabetes.
