Planet Organic Sales Exploding

When Planet Organic Health Corp., an Alberta-based natural and organic supermarket chain opened its first store in Ontario in Port Credit in 2007, it knew it was on to something big.

The company was founded 15 years ago in Alberta, and now has 10 stores across Canada, including three in the GTA.

The company reported sales of $1.6 million in 2001, but in the seven years since then, Planet Organic's bottom line has grown to a phenomenal $114 million.

"There's definitely a growing trend for organic foods because of health concerns and concerns about processed food," Darren Krissie, vice president corporate development, told The News. "These factors are primary drivers and purchase motivators for our customers."

The Port Credit store, located near Hurontario St. and Lakeshore Blvd., is a 10,000-sq.-ft. space stocking a variety of organic produce in the deli, dairy, grocery and frozen sections, in addition to carrying a wide array of body care and supplements.

Krissie said the high cost of organic products – a four-litre bag of milk costs $11.29, an English cucumber is priced at $3.49, and a tray of dozen eggs can set a customer back $4.59 to $7.79 – is not a barrier for consumers. The benefits outweighed the cost as there is no preservative or pesticide used in the production, she said.

"We price our products competitively, but organic food products are definitely more expensive than conventional products," Krissie said. "There is high-quality control involved in the production of organic products; the high cost of raw ingredients is more too."
