Does Dong Quai Cool Hot Flashes?

THE RESEARCH Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is a traditional Chinese herb used for menstrual and menopausal complaints. When Israeli researchers gave an herbal blend containing dong quai to 25 women, 47% said their hot flashes disappeared, compared with 19% in a placebo group. But the formula also contained black cohosh, which some studies suggest can quell hot flashes as well. So it's impossible to know what part--if any--dong quai played in the results.

SHOULD I TAKE IT? Look for a multiple-herb formula with chaste-tree berry, black cohosh, red clover, American ginseng, and milk thistle, the other ingredients in the Israeli supplement.

BOTTOM LINE Dong quai may help only as part of an herbal blend.
